What is Bill of materials (BOM)?

Definition

A bill of materials is the complete list of raw materials, parts and sub-assemblies, with quantities, needed to make one unit of a product.

A single-level BOM lists only the direct inputs of a product. A multi-level BOM also breaks each sub-assembly into its own parts, so a machine can be planned down to every bolt.
