How to create a bill of materials and run a production job

IndustryX Suite Team 1 min read Intermediate

Available in Foundation and above

Step 1: Build the bill of materials

Create the finished product and its bill of materials: each raw material or part with the quantity needed for one unit. On Foundation the BOM is single-level. From Standard you can build multi-level BOMs with sub-assemblies.

Step 2: Create the production job

Create a production job for the product, the quantity to make and the due date. The materials needed are worked out from the BOM.

Step 3: Issue material

Issue raw material from stores to the job. If stock is short, raise a purchase requirement first.

Step 4: Check quality

Record in-process and final quality checks. See the quality checks guide.

Step 5: Receive finished goods

When the job is done, receive the finished goods into stock. Cost flows from the material issued.

Watch for

  • Differences between planned and actual material use. These show yield and scrap.
  • Jobs open longer than planned, which means work in progress is piling up.

Do I need a bill of materials for every product?

You need one for every product you make. Items you only buy and sell do not need a BOM.

What is the difference between single-level and multi-level BOMs?

A single-level BOM lists only direct inputs. A multi-level BOM also breaks each sub-assembly into its own parts. Single-level starts on Foundation, multi-level on Standard.

Can I make a product if raw material is short?

You can create the job, but you can only issue the stock you have. Purchase the shortfall first.
